How It Works
Four simple steps
Your Provider Orders the Test
When your healthcare provider determines you need an echocardiogram, they place an order. At participating practices, SCIER Labs can perform the exam on-site.
We Come to the Office
Our certified sonographers arrive at your doctor’s facility with state-of-the-art portable equipment — bringing the imaging to you for added convenience.
Quick, Painless Exam
The echo takes about 30–60 minutes. It’s completely non-invasive — no needles, no radiation, no prep. You can go about your day right after.
Results to Your Doctor
A board-certified cardiologist reviews your images and sends a detailed report to your ordering physician, typically within one business day.

What is an Echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram — often called an “echo” — uses harmless sound waves to create real-time, moving images of your heart. It allows your care team to see:
- —How well your heart chambers pump (ejection fraction)
- —Whether your heart valves open and close properly
- —If there are blood clots, tumors, or fluid around the heart
- —The size and thickness of your heart walls
- —Blood flow patterns through your heart and major vessels
Safe & Non-Invasive
Unlike X-rays or CT scans, echocardiograms use no radiation. The test is completely painless and can be repeated as often as needed without any health risk.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram (echo) is a non-invasive test that uses sound waves (ultrasound) to create detailed images of your heart. It shows how your heart chambers and valves are functioning, how blood flows through your heart, and can detect many types of heart disease.
How is the exam performed?
You’ll lie on an exam table, typically on your left side. A sonographer will apply a warm gel to your chest and move a small handheld device (transducer) over your chest wall. The transducer sends and receives sound waves that create images of your heart on a monitor. The exam usually takes 30–60 minutes.
Is an echocardiogram painful?
No. An echocardiogram is completely painless and non-invasive. You may feel slight pressure from the transducer on your chest, and the gel may feel cool initially. There is no radiation involved, and the test has no known risks or side effects.
How do I prepare for my exam?
Generally, no special preparation is needed. You can eat and drink normally and take your regular medications. Wear a comfortable, two-piece outfit as you may need to change into a gown. Avoid applying lotions to your chest area before the exam.
When will I get my results?
The images are reviewed by a board-certified cardiologist, and a report is sent to your ordering physician, typically within one business day. Your doctor will discuss the results with you and any recommended follow-up.
Do I need an order from a provider?
Yes. An echocardiogram requires an order from a qualified healthcare provider, such as a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. At practices that partner with SCIER Labs, the exam can be performed conveniently at the office where you already receive care.
Can I pay out of pocket instead of using insurance?
Yes. If you have a high-deductible plan or prefer to pay directly, our self-pay rates offer a transparent, affordable alternative. Contact us for current pricing.
